A memorial photo mosaic, made by everyone who knew them

One portrait, formed from the photos that family and friends send in. Each person adds a picture and a few words from their own phone, in their own time.

Choosing the portrait

Pick a photo where the face fills most of the frame and the background is plain: a doorway, a wall, the sky. Portraits taken in soft daylight work better than flash photos, because the mosaic is built from light and dark areas and flash flattens them.

The picture is cropped to a tall 4 by 5 shape. An older print is fine. Photograph it flat, near a window, without the glass of the frame, and upload that. If the family cannot agree on one portrait, start with any of them; the owner can change the picture later and the tiles rearrange themselves.

Asking people for photos

Send the link the way the family already talks: a group text, the email that carries the service details, or a line in the printed order of service. No one needs an account or an app. They open the link, choose a photo, type their name and, if they wish, a short message.

It helps to say what kind of photo you are hoping for. A picture of the person with them, a picture of themselves, a place the two of them shared. Older relatives often have the best photographs and the least patience with phones, so ask one younger person to collect a few on their behalf.

If the page will be shown at a service, choose "I approve each one first" when you make it. Every photo then waits for you before it appears, and you can remove any photo at any time.

When to start, and what happens afterwards

There is no need to hurry. The portrait is recognisable from the very first photo, because photos repeat to fill the picture until more arrive. You can open the page a few days before the service and leave it open afterwards, so that people who could not attend are able to send something later.

A free page takes photos for 30 days and stays viewable for 30 more. Both dates are shown on your owner page from the first day. If you unlock the page you can download the finished portrait as a large image file to print wherever you choose, and show a slideshow of the photos on a television during a gathering.

When the page reaches its end date, the photos and messages are deleted. You can also delete everything yourself at any moment.

Questions

Can I check photos before anyone else sees them?

Yes. Choose "I approve each one first" when you make the page, or switch it on later from your owner page. Each new photo then waits for your approval.

Can we show the mosaic at the service?

The page itself can be shown on any screen with a browser. An unlocked page also has a slideshow link made for a television or digital frame, which moves through the photos and the portrait on its own.

What happens to the photos afterwards?

They stay on the page until its end date, which your owner page shows from the first day, and are then deleted. Photos are never sold and never used to train AI. You can delete the page yourself at any time.

Do you print the portrait?

No. An unlocked page gives you a 9600 by 12000 pixel image file, which you can take to any print shop or online printer.
